How To Remove Lock Files on POP mailboxes
=========================================================
PROBLEMS WITH CHECKING EMAIL - 5th September 2003.
"Mailbox Locked" error.
Ongoing difficulties with the Telstra network
have meant that some clients using this ISP have had problems checking
their
email,
due to slow connections and timeouts. If you have been getting
a message about a "locked mailbox" that lasts more than
about 10 minutes, please read on.
HOW TO FIX IT:
1. Shut down your mail program to prevent further checking attempts.
2. Log into the Hosting control panel at www.webangel.com.au/cpanel
3. Enter your hosting account user name and password.
(Note: Access to this information should be restricted. It is the "master
key" to the content of your website, email facilities, and
hosting account)
4. Click on the "File Manager" icon on the top menu
bar
5. Click on the Folder icon beside the word "mail"
6. Click on the Folder beside the name of the mail account you
are having problems with.
7. Delete any files named inbox.pop or inbox.lock by clicking
on the file name, and then clicking on the "delete file" command
at the top right of the screen.
WARNING: do not delete the file with the name inbox. This contains
your mail messages.
8. Close down the File Manager screen
9. Try to check your mail again. It should now work OK.
(If you have more than one POP box in your hosting account, you
will have to go through this process for each of the boxes that
are affected.)
Please give us some feedback on whether this solved your problem.
WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN:
This problem is usually caused by a dropped connection while you
are checking your mail.
When our system delivers mail to your mail box, it creates a lock
file while mail is being delivered.
A lock file is also created when you are checking your mail.
After these events are completed, the lock file is removed.
If your connection drops out during the mail transfer, the lock
file may not be deleted.
This will cause problems the next time you try to collect your
mail, and result in a "mailbox locked" message.
